“If somebody gets released here in San Antonio, they probably won’t get a hearing for the next 4 to 5 years.”
AUSTIN, Texas (Texas Insider Report) — South Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar said earlier this week that 51,500 illegal immigrants have now been dropped off at the San Antonio bus stop since December 2018. And, Cuellar said, 90% of those are crossing illegally, asking for asylum, and come from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
“There are people in other countries now understanding, saying, ‘Hey this is what we need to do – bring a child.’ If you come with a child, a family unit, then you’re treated very differently,” said Cuellar.
“And if somebody gets released here in San Antonio, they probably won’t get a hearing for the next four to five years,” said Cuellar.
It’s a loophole for the illegal immigrants who have figured out a way to stay in the United States.
Especially when they arrive as a family unit.
Unlike deporting those illegal crossers who come from Mexico or Canada, the process for those coming from Central America is far more time-consuming and costly.
Cuellar wants to change that, pushing for more immigration judges and a new process allowing more migrants from all countries to be deported faster.
“My thing is, we turn (and process) Mexicans and Canadians right away. Why not treat everyone the same,” Cuellar said.
Another part of the solution – helping Central American countries work on their problems to reduce the number of people seeking asylum – Cuellar said it’s a far better investment than a border wall.
